Psalm 12 begins with the cry of the soul to God: Usquequo, Domine? “How long, O Lord?” How much longer can things go on like this? How long until we are delivered?
One cannot help but echo the words of the psalmist, after learning of one of the most recent aberrations in the ongoing disaster that is the pontificate of Pope Francis. A video of the Pontiff scandalously blessing the invalid “marriage” of Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos and Maria Clemencia Rodriguez Munera was posted by the latter on her Twitter account on September 10. Santos and Rodriguez Munera, both previously married to others and divorced, “married” in 1987. The tweet was brazenly captioned: “Your Holiness, thank you for blessing our marriage.”
Due to the lack of clear audio in the video, the technical possibility does exist that the Pope was not specifically blessing the sinful and null union of the Colombian couple. However, we can be morally certain that the blessing given by Francis did concern the “marriage,” for a number of reasons. We have the “evidence” in the Pope’s previous statements and actions regarding the Sacrament of Matrimony, including the 2014 and 2015 Synods, the document Amoris laetitia, and testimony regarding his letters and phone calls regarding the admission of the divorced and “remarried” to the Sacraments.
If Rodriguez Munera were lying, the Vatican has had ample time to make a clarification or a denial and has not. Quid tacit consentire videtur, the old Latin adage asserts, “he who is silent consents.” So we must take the tweet at face value. Even if the blessing did not specifically concern the “marriage,” it was no less sacrilegious as it was given in a public way to two persons living in a well-known, scandalous and sinful manner; not to mention President Santos being a strong proponent for homosexual “marriage.”
No one and nothing can change the Natural and Divine Laws, not even a Pope. The Pope’s office, his mission and duty is to preserve and protect the constant truths of the Faith. In Vatican I’s dogmatic constitution on the Church of Christ, Pastor aeternus, we read the infallible teaching — something that each Catholic must believe — “For the Holy Ghost was promised to the successors of Peter, not that they might, by His revelation, make known some new doctrine, but that, by His assistance, they might religiously guard and faithfully expound the revelation of the deposit of Faith transmitted by the Apostles.” (Chapter 3, Section 6)
We read in Sacred Scripture: “Woe to you that call evil good” (Isaias 5:20). Pope Francis, and any other pope for that matter, cannot call evil good. He cannot change, or give the appearance of changing the Church’s doctrine. He cannot recognize or bless a false “marriage” which is nothing other than an adulterous union. This scandal is not just a dereliction of duty, but another slap in the Face of Our Lord, Who established: “Every one that putteth away his wife and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.” (St. Luke 16:18)
The Saints, especially the Doctors of the Church, teach us that we shall be judged according to our state in life, and the amount of knowledge and the responsibilities that we have been given. What a truly terrible thing for the Vicar of Christ on earth — responsible for guiding, teaching and preaching the true Catholic Faith to every living soul — to give scandal instead. As Our Lord said: “For it must be that scandals come: but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh.” (St. Matthew 18:7)
Humanly speaking, the Church and the world are beyond help. No solution has worked, no other solution can work; because as Our Lady told us at Fatima, only She can help us. As simple or naïve or impossible as it may sound, Fatima is the only answer, namely the proper Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Let us pray that Pope Francis comes to this realization as soon as possible. Until he does, we shall witness not only continued, but increasing scandal and suffering. Usquequo, Domine? How long, O Lord?
