The elevation of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to the Chair of St. Peter is an event of supreme importance to all Catholics. While the election of a new Pope is always significant, the new pontificate of Benedict XVI comes at a moment in which the Church (and, indeed, the entire world) is facing challenges and dangers that are unprecedented in human history. The new Pontiff begins his reign with a Church left fractured by internal dissent and chaos, and confronted by a radically secularized culture that is characterized by an intense and uncompromising hostility to many things Catholic. It would appear that the great chastisement which the Mother of God warned us about at Fatima has now truly begun in earnest and that this new Pope will, sadly, as She predicted, "have much to suffer."

In the past, in his role as both a Catholic theologian and as the head of the Holy Office, Our Lady's Apostolate has had more than one occasion to strongly disagree with the new Pope, particularly over his interpretation of the Fatima Message and, more specifically, with his release of what we believe to be an incomplete and partial version of the Third Secret. That said, we join today with millions of other faithful Catholics in praying, as Our Lady directed, for our Holy Father, asking Almighty God, His Blessed Mother and all the angels and saints to bless him, and give him the strength and resolution to lead and restore the Church to its divinely appointed glory.

As always, I want to ask you to remember me and all Our Lady's workers in your prayers and at Holy Mass. We rely more than I can tell you on your prayers, especially each and every Rosary you can offer for us. Again, I want to urge you to send us your own special intentions so that I and the other priests of the Apostolate can remember them at our Masses. May God bless and keep you.

Starting this month, the Fatima Center begins a historic effort to petition our new Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, to consecrate Russia in union with all the bishops of the world, on a single day, at the same time, as Our Lady solemnly requested in Her Fatima Message. Our goal is to gather at least 5,000,000 signatures by the end of the year and hand deliver them to the Holy Father in Rome. To meet this ambitious goal, we are going to need the prayers and help of all Our Lady's friends around the world. You can sign the online petition by clicking on the link below. If you would like printed versions of this petition, please let us know via e-mail or by calling us toll-free at 1-800-263-8160 (overseas: 001-905-871-8041).

At the beginning of the pontificate of the new Holy Father, these words of prayer and petition offered by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XV, in 1917, in the midst of the awful bloodbath that was the First World War, are perhaps even more meaningful and true today. A mere eight days following this urgent appeal of the Holy Father, Our Blessed Mother first appeared to the three child seers at Fatima.

"To Mary, then, Who is the Mother of Mercy and omnipotent by grace, let loving and devout appeal go up from every corner of the earth – from noble temples and tiniest chapels, from royal palaces and mansions of the rich as from the poorest hut – from blood-drenched plains and seas. Let it bear to Her the anguished cry of mothers and wives, the wailing of innocent little ones, the sighs of every generous heart: that Her most tender and benign solicitude may be moved and the peace we ask for be obtained for our agitated world."

May is the month that our Holy Church dedicates to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Here is a beautiful passage from "Ave Maria" (1868) explaining why this month is consecrated to Our Heavenly Mother:

"The Month of Mary, as we all know, is the month of May, which pious custom has consecrated to honor the Holy Virgin in a more special manner than during the rest of the year. But why is the month of May chosen in preference to any other month? We can give many reasons: May is the month of flowers, the part of the year when earth promises us its treasures; the Holy Virgin, having been to the world the announcement of the coming of its Savior, She is called by the Church, Mystical Rose; it is a tribute due to Her to consecrate the flowers of our gardens to the adornment of Her altar. This month, which commences the most beautiful season of the year, is also the time when, very frequently, we find around and within us dangers against which the all-powerful protection of the Mother of God is our safeguard.

For all Christians the devotion of the Month of Mary consists in consecrating each day some little time to practices in Her honor. Those among us who can, should assist at the daily public devotions in church, - an advantage that should be most gratefully seized, because the united prayers, made by all assembled at the foot of Her altar, are most pleasing to Our Mother, and most sure to profit our own souls by their certainty of gaining Her protection. Yet many may be hindered by just reasons from taking part in these meetings so fruitful in graces; important business engagements, the care of children or the sick, or other calls of charity, legitimately dispense from the public services; but surely none of these reasons need hinder any person from making at least some little prayer in Her honor, in addition to his usual morning devotions and petitions for help and protection; and certainly everyone can have a picture or statue of Our Lady in some place of honor, and by adorning it and offering flowers throughout this month, prove his desire to make himself agreeable to Her. All, in short, can, before retiring to rest, cast themselves on their knees before this image and recite some little prayer to Mary. These simple practices are easy for all."
