More Traditional Latin Masses Being Said by Roman Hierarchy

There are still many within the Catholic Church — including the hierarchy — who prefer to think that the New Mass — the Novus Ordo Missae — has effectively and irrevocably replaced the Traditional Latin Mass, also known as the Tridentine Rite, and that this has been a great boon to Catholicism.

Pope Benedict XVI is happily not one of them. He declared definitively in 2007 in Summorum Pontificum that the Traditional Latin Mass was never suppressed or made illicit and that every priest may celebrate this Mass without the special permission of his bishop.

This declaration affirmed what many adherents of the Traditional Latin Mass had argued since the introduction of the New Mass and the simultaneous and illicit suppression of the Tridentine Rite. It took almost 40 years for the Holy See to settle the question. But it has been settled, once and for all, and there can be no appeal to higher authority. Roma locuta est.

And while there has been no radical reversal of liturgical practices in most Catholic parishes, more and more Tridentine Masses are being offered. What’s more, the champions of the Tridentine Rite who held firmly to the position acknowledged by the Holy Father as correct are now being granted respectability. (See "Pope Repeals Excommunications of Society of St. Pius X Bishops" and an update on the SSPX doctrinal discussions.)

What’s more, Tridentine Masses are now being offered increasingly in Rome and by members of the Roman Curia. In an event that should not go unnoticed, a priests’ conference in Rome the first week of 2010 includes the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass by top officials of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments. (See

Scheduled events include a recitation of Vespers and Benediction according to the Tridentine Rite by U.S. Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia, secretary to the Congregation, at St. Stephen of the Abyssinians, which is located within the walls of the Vatican.

Events also include Cardinal Canizares Llovera, prefect of the Congregation, offering a Solemn Pontifical High Mass at the Basilica of St. John Lateran.

What can this mean? What was unthinkable only a few years ago — the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass in the Vatican — has become acceptable and, so it would seem, prestigious. Even the secular media has come to recognize that the Traditional Latin Mass is gaining in popularity, and for sound reasons. (See the Fatima Perspectives article by Christopher A. Ferrara, “Miracle on Eighth Avenue”.)

The priests’ conference is that of the U.S.-based Confraternity of Catholic Clergy and the Australian Confraternity of Catholic Clergy. Its purpose is to celebrate the Year of the Priest. That the celebration should feature the Traditional Latin Mass and Liturgy by the Roman Congregation that oversees Divine Worship is a cause for happiness and hope. St. John Vianney, pray for us.

Attack on Pope Benedict XVI Demonstrates Vulnerability

Many who gathered about their television sets to watch the Holy Father’s Midnight Christmas Mass were shocked to see Pope Benedict pulled to the ground by a woman who jumped over the barriers and eluded security.

Providentially, the Pope was unhurt and the woman who attacked him was quickly restrained. But perhaps the event may also be understood as a Providential warning: the Pope is in danger.

Those of us who have studied and urged the implementation of Our Lady of Fatima’s requests have long stressed the danger that delaying obedience to the Queen of Heaven poses for the Holy Father. For our justifiable concern, we have often been characterized as alarmist or sensationalist. We are neither. We are realists.

The Holy Father has announced his intention to travel to Fatima this year and be in Fatima on May 12 and May 13. The outlines of the Pope’s itinerary have been announced, but his intention in going to Fatima and what he plans to say there remain unknown.

Those of us who pray for the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and for the full revelation of the Third Secret of Fatima (see Petition to Our Holy Father - The Consecration of Russia and Petition to Our Holy Father - The Release of the full Third Secret ) have reason to hope. Those who oppose the Fatima message have reason to fear.

And the focus of so many hopes and fears is Pope Benedict XVI. The fate of the world and of countless souls depends not on the machinations of politicians, but on the actions of the Vicar of Christ.

Pope Benedict has many powerful enemies, some of whom are within the Church. His attempts to restore Tradition in Liturgy and Doctrine have alarmed those who want to use the Church to further the plans of the globalists and materialists.

His decision to go to Fatima has probably increased the dangers that surround him. He needs our prayers. He needs Our Lady’s help. And the best way to secure that help is by heeding Her requests.

Latest Fatima Perspectives by Christopher A. Ferrara

Putin Arrests Santa and His Helper – On New Year’s Eve, dozens of anti-Kremlin activists were arrested (including an 82-year-old woman) during a demonstration in Moscow, after “Hundreds of riot police surrounded a Christmas tree in the centre of the city and arrested the opposition activists as they gathered to defend their right to peaceful protest … as enshrined under Article 31 of the Russian constitution.”

Waiting to Exhale in Russia – Vladimir Putin, current prime minister and former president of Russia, craves his hold on power in Russia, which is why it is becoming increasingly certain that he will run for the Russian presidency again in 2012.

The Most Religious Nation? – A worldwide survey by Religion Monitor found “the United States is the most religious nation in the industrialized world.” But the survey does not address the central question: What exactly is meant by “religious”?

Abortion: Where It All Began – Traces the history of the legalization of abortion in Russia followed by Germany in the 1920’s, resulting in the murder of millions of the innocent unborn every year.

The Growing Threat of Hate Crimes Against Catholics – We are witnessing a new eruption of American’s genetic fear and loathing of Roman Catholicism. Violence against Catholics can be expected to increase in the proportion to which the Church militant is militant in its opposition to the “culture of death.”

Henry the Tyrant - Part II – Bishop Henry of Calgary thinks he owns the ancient received and approved rite of Mass in the Church and can ban or allow it at his pleasure. His response to complaints from the faithful would be to throw his weight around by doing the opposite.

Vatican Says No Nightclub Churches – According to the Vatican, what is needed is a proper protocol for getting rid of all the churches the great “renewal” of Vatican II has emptied: the churches can be sold or even destroyed if they lack artistic value or need significant repair work — but not sold to owners of nightclubs.

That Fraud Called “Liberty” – The bending of leaders to the “will of the people” is the “freedom” from the “tyranny of kings and priests” that we are expected to celebrate as our “leaders” tax us, regulate us, wage war after war, and oppress us in a hundred ways no king of Christendom would even have dreamed of imposing on his subjects.

Henry the Tyrant – Calgary’s Bishop Henry suspended the traditional Latin Mass at a local parish ministered to by priests of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter after the Fraternity priests advised that they were unable to comply with his “instructions” to refrain from distributing Holy Communion on the tongue during the Latin Mass.

Miracle on Eighth Avenue – The New York Times has done something extraordinary — indeed, almost miraculous, given the genetically leftist constitution of the “paper of record” — by publishing a Op-Ed piece written by a Roman Catholic traditionalist in which the New Mass of Paul VI is described as “a radical break from the traditional Latin Mass” created by Annibale Bugnini, who “aimed at appeasing non-Catholics, and… emulating Protestant services…”

The Preparation of Russia… for What? – Two recent developments remind us of the centrality of Russia in the future of our troubled world.
