Saturday, Our Ladys Day
Dear Friend of Our Lady,
You may be familiar with, or have likely heard of the devotional prayers known as Little Office of the Immaculate Conception (commonly referred to as The Little Office). This devotion is one of the requirements for obtaining the Sabbatine Privilege of the Brown Scapular.
The Sabbatine Privilege is the promise given to those who devoutly wear the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and who daily pray The Little Office.
To obtain the Sabbatine Privilege of going to Heaven on the first Saturday after ones death, one may obtain permission from a priest to substitute the daily praying of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin in place of praying The Little Office. (Father Gruner can give this permission.)
The Little Office is one of the liturgical prayers of the Church prayed by many religious communities. It is an abbreviated version of The Divine Office or breviary, which is daily prayed by priests and religious.
The Divine Office and The Little Office consist mainly of prayers from the Book of Psalms, but also contain Canticles and religious hymns. The prayers are divided into eight segments referred to as hours.
The eight hours are often said at scheduled times throughout the day (although it does not have to be said that way), beginning with Matins at midnight or the early morning hours and ending with Compline at 9:00 p.m. or the later evening hours.
With The Divine Office and The Little Office there are also special prayers said at varying times during the Liturgical year to commemorate a particular feast or season.
The enclosed booklet, entitled The Little Office of the Immaculate Conception, is composed of prayers and hymns to honor Our Lady under that special title and the privilege given to Her alone, Her Immaculate Conception.
On July 13, 1917, during the third apparition of Our Lady at Fatima, She told the three child seers Lucy, Jacinta and Francisco that to prevent the punishment of the world for its crimes by means of famine, persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father, She would come at a future date to ask for the Consecration of Russia to Her Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays.
True to Her word, on December 10, 1925, the Child Jesus appeared with Our Lady to Sister Lucy (the only surviving of the three child seers) in Pontevedra, Spain. Sister Lucy was shown a Heart encircled by thorns.
The Child Jesus said:
Then the Most Holy Virgin said:
Sister Lucy was asked by her confessor, Father Concalves, why five Saturdays...?
On May 29 while visiting the Blessed Sacrament, here is what was revealed to Sister Lucy by Our Lord:
My daughter, the reason is simple. There are five types of offenses and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary:
Notice that the first of the five blasphemies Sister Lucy conveyed was those committed against Our Ladys Immaculate Conception.
The blasphemies committed against Our Lady are increasing in public plays, movies, television, books, etc. To blaspheme against the Mother of God is to call down Gods just punishment.
Our prayers are needed to make reparation for these grievous offenses.
If at all possible, in addition to praying the Holy Rosary and making the Five First Saturday Communions of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, further console Our Lady with the recitation of The Little Office of The Immaculate Conception.
This office may be said anytime. In preparation for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, please join us in making a novena reciting The Little Office of The Immaculate Conception for nine days prior to the feast day.
