Five First Saturdays
Re: An Aid for Making the

“I promise to assist at the moment of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep Me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to Me.”

-Our Lady of Fatima to Sister Lucy (Dec 10, 1925)

Feast of St. Louis IX
August 25, 2010

Dear Friend of Our Lady,

You have likely read these words of Our Lady of Fatima many times over the years in literature produced by The Fatima Center and in letters from Father Gruner. What a wonderful promise Our Lady makes.

Repeating these words for the enlightenment of someone else may lead to the question: How can they be a part of the Fatima Message if they were not spoken until 1925?

The answer is that it is a continuation of what Our Lady said at Fatima in 1917:

— June 13, 1917 — “Jesus wishes to make use of you [Lucy] to make Me known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart. To whoever embraces this devotion I promise salvation; these souls shall be dear to God, as flowers placed by Me to adorn His throne.”

— July 13, 1917 — “You have seen hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace” ... “but if people do not cease offending God” ... God will “punish the world for its crimes by means of war, famine and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father.”

“To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the Consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays.”

Over the years Father Gruner has stressed the importance of doing what Our Lady of Fatima has asked of each of us: amend our lives, offer sacrifices for sinners, pray the Rosary every day, and make the First Saturday Communion of Reparation.

For some reason, making the Five First Saturdays Communion of Reparation has been the most difficult for many.

Here is some of what we frequently hear from supporters who very much want to make (and complete) this devotion:

“I lose track of when I started it”; “Something always happens to keep me from completing all four requirements on the First Saturday”; “Something happened and I wasn’t able to make the First Saturday devotion on the last month, now I have to start all over again”; “I forgot one of the four things I was supposed to do”; “There is no place in my area where I can go to Confession or Holy Communion on Saturday”; “I am afraid to start the First Saturdays devotion for fear I won’t be able to complete it”; “I forgot to offer it all for the intention of making Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary”; “I made the First Saturdays Communion of Reparation many times and now I found out I have been doing it wrong” ...

You get the picture, perhaps you can even relate to it.

Because of the magnificent promise Our Lady makes to those who make the Communion of Reparation — to assist at the moment of death with all the graces necessary for salvation — you can understand why our enemy, satan, will do his best to keep us from completing this devotion.

We have heard the requests of some of our supporters for something to help keep track of and do properly, the Five First Saturdays Communion of Reparation.

Enclosed with this letter is a new purse or pocket-sized leaflet entitled First Saturday Communion of Reparation Checklist. A group of Fatima Center workers pooled together their ideas and this is what they came up with. We hope you like it and, more important, we hope it helps you to complete the First Saturday Communion of Reparation as requested by Our Lady.

You noticed that one of the reasons listed above for not making this devotion is because of the unavailability of Holy Communion and Confession on Saturdays in a particular area. If this is the case, then you can obtain permission from your priest to make this devotion on the Sunday after the first Saturday. You may contact the Fatima Center and one of the Fatima Center priests will give you permission.

Just remember it must be only for extreme circumstances — i.e. not possible on Saturdays because of family difficulties or not possible because Communion and Confession are not available within a reasonable distance from where you live.

With regard to Confession: permission was obtained by Sister Lucy to be able to complete these Saturdays of Reparation by going to Confession 8 days before or after the First Saturday as long as you are in the state of grace when you receive Holy Communion on the First Saturday and remember to offer your Confession in Reparation to the Immaculate Heart.

Something to remember is the reason for Five First Saturdays of Reparation and not seven, or nine, etc. The question was posed to Sister Lucy by her confessor, Father Goncalves, and she appealed to Our Lord to give her the answer. Here is what Sister Lucy was able to report back to her confessor:

“When I was in the chapel with Our Lord part of the night of May 29-30, 1930, I spoke to Our Lord ... I suddenly felt myself more intimately possessed by the Divine Presence and, if I am not mistaken, this is what was revealed to me:

  1. Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception;
  2. Blasphemies against Her Perpetual Virginity;
  3. Blasphemies against Her Divine Maternity, in refusing at the same time to recognize Her as the Mother of men;
  4. The blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children indifference or scorn, or even hatred of this Immaculate Mother;
  5. The offenses of those who outrage Her directly in Her holy images.
“Here, My daughter, is the reason why the Immaculate Heart of Mary inspired Me to ask for this little act of Reparation ...”

Saint Padre Pio said that when enough of the lay faithful do what the Mother of God asked at Fatima, God will give the graces for the Pope and the bishops to make the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart as requested at Fatima.

Making the First Saturday Communion of Reparation can do so much for each of us, for those we love, for those abandoned, and for the ultimate goal — to help earn the graces needed for the Holy Father to call for the Consecration of Russia to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart and herald in Her Triumph.

Remembering how much Our Heavenly Mother has done — and continues to do — for us, why would we not want to do this solely to console Her?

Saint Leonard of Port Maurice wrote that the number of Holy Masses we assist at in our life will be our greatest friend when we are called to stand before Our Lord. To that may be added, for those who have remembered Our Lady during their life, She will be there as a great defender appealing to Her Son on our behalf when it is most needed — She tells us this in Her promise for those who make the First Saturday Communion of Reparation.

For your sake please make the Five First Saturdays of Reparation if you have not already done so. If you have already completed them at least once please continue to make them for your children, parents, family members, and others dear to you. Encourage others to make this devotion as well.
