Re: The Brown Scapular and
The Fatima Crusader Issue #92

“One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, I will save the world.”

(Our Lady to St. Dominic)

Holy Apostles Peter & Paul

Dear Friend of Our Lady,

The month of July is upon us and as you know July 16 is a special day, honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

It is not a holy day of obligation. Many Catholics may not even be aware of the existence of this important feast day.

But to you, me and all devotees of Our Lady, it is a very special day. It marks the date that the Queen of Heaven condescended to give to one of Her servants, St. Simon Stock, a most precious gift, the Brown Scapular.

Our Lady appeared with the garment of the Brown Scapular to St. Simon in the Thirteenth Century, in response to his prayers on behalf of the men of his religious community, who despite continuous prayer, rigorous fasts and other penances, lived in fear of going to hell for eternity.

The Blessed Virgin Mary said to St. Simon that: to give you assurance that your priests and brothers will go to Heaven, I bring you a vestment, a scapular. Our Lady handed St. Simon the brown woolen Scapular and said, “This shall be the privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.”

Pope Clement VIII extended the promise of this gift of Our Lady to all Catholics by granting to the General of the Carmelite Religious Order the faculty of establishing wherever it wished, the Confraternity of Mount Carmel, with permission granted to the general or his delegate to admit lay people into the Confraternity, to share in the same promises as the rest of the Carmelites.

A Sign of Salvation and Protection

Wearing the Brown Scapular is a sign of predestination just as reciting the Holy Rosary is a sign of predestination. On July 16, 1251, Our Lady gave the Brown Scapular to St. Simon Stock. On July 16, 1858, the date of the 18th and last apparition of Our Lady at Lourdes, the most Blessed Virgin appeared to Bernadette as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, thereby reminding the faithful to wear Her Brown Scapular.

As you know, Our Lady of Fatima also reminded the faithful to wear the Brown Scapular on the 6th and final apparition at Fatima on October 13, 1917, when before ascending back to Heaven, She appeared as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and held out the Scapular to indicate again She wants us all to wear it.

To know about the existence of the Brown Scapular, to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular, to have access to and wear the Brown Scapular, is a great gift from Our Lord and Our Lady.

To Receive the Scapular Promise You Must Be Enrolled

In order to receive Our Lady’s Scapular promise: “Whosoever dies clothed in this garment shall not suffer eternal fire”, Holy Mother Church teaches a Catholic must be invested (enrolled) in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular by a Catholic priest.

Once a Catholic is enrolled in the Confraternity, he is enrolled for life. Although anyone may wear the Brown Scapular, only Catholics may be enrolled in the Confraternity.

To Receive the Scapular Promise
You Must Wear the Scapular

One must also die wearing the Brown Scapular in order to receive the Scapular promise.

To wear the Brown Scapular, it means that one piece of brown wool cloth is hanging down in front and the other piece of cloth is in the back. The pieces of brown wool are attached to two strings or ribbons. The Scapular is placed over the head and the strings rest on the person’s shoulders with one string on each shoulder.

For just a little more effort — that is, wearing the scapular instead of putting it in a pocket, or purse — one can receive the full benefit of the Scapular as Our Lady intended.

The Scapular must be, and should be, worn at all times. In doing so, we are telling Our Lady through that action that we want to belong to Her, that we want to be under Her protective mantle.

For those who say they don’t wear the Brown Scapular because it can be seen above the neckline of the blouse or shirt one is wearing - with all due respect, it is quite likely one is not dressed modestly enough.

In commemoration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, as a reminder to each one of us to wear Her protective garment, and as a means of letting others know of the existence of such a precious gift, the Brown Scapular, we have enclosed a prayer card in honor of Her.

If you would like more copies of the enclosed prayer card or a Brown Scapular itself to give to others and as a means of teaching others about one of Our Lady’s most precious gifts, please call us at 1-800-845-3047.

Issue 92 of The Fatima Crusader

In case you have not yet seen the May issue, Issue 92 of The Fatima Crusader is available. You may have received it from Father Gruner already.

If you have not received it and would like a copy, or if you have received it and would like more copies, just call us at 1-800-845-3047.

If you have a copy but have not yet read it, I encourage you to try and spare 10 minutes daily to look at it. You will certainly want to read the interview with Father Kramer beginning on page 7 titled: “The Secret Warned Against Vatican Council II and the New Mass”.

Father Gruner’s article, “Queen of Heaven Rejoice...”, beginning on page 2, reminds us of the sufferings of the Queen and King of Heaven on our behalf and how we must pray and work hard by offering our sufferings on behalf of our fellow man and spreading the Message of Fatima, doing our part to help save souls.

“The Little Number of Those Who Are Saved”, by St. Leonard of Port Maurice (page 12), is something we all need to read and be reminded of. Just as St. Paul reminds us “we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling”, St. Leonard tells us what many of the saints and Doctors of the Church have advised, that the greater majority of all adults, including Catholics, are not saved.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

In the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts,

P.S. Please pray some Hail Marys for a special intention - next month we hope to have a surprise for you.

P.P.S. Remember wearing the Scapular is a “sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.” For a free Brown Scapular call us at 1-800-845-3047.
