Pope Francis on April 8 released his much-anticipated post-Synodal Exhortation on Marriage and the family, titled Amoris Laetitia (“The Joy of Love”).
Cardinal Walter Kasper this past March pledged that the document would be revolutionary. Unfortunately, Kasper was correct.
I have read Francis’ Exhortation in its entirety: 240+ pages, over 58,000 words.
Amidst great drifts of verbiage, some not bad, some remarkably tedious, Francis effectively canonizes situation ethics.
The key section of revolution appears at the end, Chapter Eight.
He cautiously opens the door for Communion to the divorced and remarried on a ‘case-by-case’ basis.
Progressivists already celebrate the Exhortation as a 'radical shift'.
This new approach — unacceptable to any prior Pope in history — effectively destroys key elements of Catholic Moral Theology.
The tumultuous Synods have brought forth a tumultuous Exhortation.
Speaking to the National Catholic Register on April 7 on the document, Catholic philosopher Antonio Livi described Amoris Laetitia as an “ambiguous text.” He went on to warn against the document’s separation of doctrine from pastoral practice.
“This really is the theological error of the document,” he said, “because pastoral practice cannot be anything other than a prudent but rigorous application of the doctrine.”
